The Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC) is currently consulting its members about a recent proposal by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to phase-out all agricultural uses of imidacloprid. CHC will submit a response to the federal government’s proposal based on the results of this consultation.
Imidacloprid, which is found in such pesticides as Admire®, Merit™, and Genesis™, is used in a wide range of horticultural crops, including stone fruit, berries, and leafy, tuberous and legume vegetables.
PMRA’s environmental assessment showed that, based on currently available information, the continued high volume use of imidacloprid in agricultural areas is not sustainable. The pesticide is being measured at levels that are harmful to aquatic insects, which are an important food source for fish, birds and other animals.
The health assessment did not identify human health concerns from any exposure when used according to current label standards.
