The Horticulture and Cross Sectoral Division of the Sector Development and Analysis Directorate, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is pleased to present the latest report: “Statistical Overview of the Canadian Vegetable Industry – 2014”. This report has been prepared by Samuel Gauthier.
The report provides a comprehensive statistical overview of the vegetable industry statistics. It contains tables and charts about Canadian vegetable production, farm gate value, new vegetable products, consumption, trade statistics as well as world production of vegetables.
Some highlights from the report are:
- Ontario is the largest producer of field vegetables. In 2014, it accounted for 52% of Canada’s total production, followed by Quebec with 34%.
- While Canada’s total production of field vegetables increased slightly from 2013 (2.9%), farm gate value (FGV) grew by approximately $107 million (12.7%), reaching a five-year high of $946 million in 2014.
- In 2014, Canada’s greenhouse sector, which is comprised of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and lettuce, saw a slight increase of 1% in production from 2013. The majority of production is centered in Ontario (71%) and British Columbia (21%).
- Total Canadian vegetable (field vegetables, greenhouse vegetables and mushrooms) exports in 2014 rose to just under $1.33 billion in 2014, of which 97% ($1.30 billion) were exported to the United States.
- Canada imported $2.93 billion worth of vegetables in 2014, with the majority ($1.85 billion – 62.1%) of total vegetable imports arriving from the United States. Mexico was the second largest source of vegetables with $741 million (25%) of total vegetable imports.
