Industry Standards & Food Safety

Canadians are fortunate to have one of the safest food supplies in the world, with a wide variety of safe, fresh and nutritious produce grown by farmers across the country. Food safety is a vital part of the fresh produce industry. While food safety is a shared responsibility between government, industry and consumers, the produce industry takes this very seriously. Food safety programs have been developed by the produce industry for food operations to minimize the risk of product contamination and foodborne illness. Industry standards are in place to protect the industry, and consumers.
FVGC advocates for food safety and industry standards that are practical and science-based. Thanks to Canada’s world class food regulatory system, you can be sure that no matter how your produce is grown, it will be nutritious and safe.
Unfortunately, close to 80% of Canadians are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables can help you meet your vitamin, mineral and fiber needs, and reduce your risk of chronic diseases.
What FVGC Needs
- Food Safety programs that are science-based and practical.
- Agile regulations that do not impede competitiveness.
- A whole-of-government approach to food policy, which takes into account the increasing burden and costs that growers are facing.
