This partnership will accelerate the development of made-in-Canada strategies that integrate cutting-edge research, technology, and policy to ensure a thriving and competitive greenhouse industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This collaboration with the University of Windsor highlights the innovation that characterizes Canada\u2019s fruit and vegetable growers,&#8221; said Marcus Janzen, President of FVGC. &#8220;Now more than ever we need smart food policies that strengthen food security, drive economic growth, and support the resilience of Canadian agriculture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both parties recognize the growing need and urgency for made-in-Canada solutions.<\/p>\n<p>FVGC\u2019s Greenhouse Vegetable Working Group plays a critical role in informing policy and regulatory decisions that support sector profitability and sustainability, maintain and enhance market access and trade, and ensure an innovative, competitive sector with a strong growth agenda. Their national, sector-led development of the Canadian Greenhouse Excellence Network (CGEN) is one part of a strong Canadian approach to solve complex challenges with evidence-based policies that meet the triple bottom line of economic, environmental and social sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s initiative, Agriculture UWindsor (AgUWin), is focused on developing and integrating innovative technologies, scientific advancements, educational programming with benefits to the greenhouse and broader agricultural sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Windsor\u2019s extensive expertise in automation, energy, industrial engineering, and talent development lends itself extremely well to solving complex agricultural challenges,\u201d said Dr. Shanthi Johnson, UWindsor\u2019s Vice-President, Research and Innovation. \u201cThe partnership will help to embed the express and real needs of the sector into the University\u2019s educational programming and research pipeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Windsor is located in Essex County, Ontario, Canada, home to the largest acreages of greenhouse agriculture in North America and second in the world to the Netherlands. Agriculture UWindsor (AgUWin), is well-positioned to deliver the infrastructure, expertise, and experience to develop and integrate innovative technologies and scientific advancements useful to the greenhouse and broader agricultural sectors.<\/p>\n<p>As Canada navigates the complexities of food security, sustainable energy, and economic resilience, partnerships such as the one between FVGC and the University of Windsor are critical to ensuring a thriving fruit and vegetable sector. Richard Lee, Vice Chair of FVGC\u2019s Greenhouse Vegetable Working Group emphasized, \u201cGreenhouse vegetable growers contribute $4.8 billion annually to Canada\u2019s economy, supporting year-round jobs and the supply of fresh, nutritious produce for all Canadians. We need evidence-based policies, feasible on-farm energy options, research, innovation and funding incentives, to position the sector for success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FVGC will continue bringing partners together to advocate for policies that support innovation and ensure that the challenges facing the fruit and vegetable sector are met with solutions that prioritize a strong, competitive, and food-secure Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABOUT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC) represents growers across the country involved in the production of over 120 different types of crops on over 14,000 farms, with a farm gate value of $7.4 billion in 2023. FVGC is an Ottawa-based voluntary, not-for-profit, national association, and, since 1922, has advocated on important issues that impact Canada\u2019s fresh produce sector, promoting healthy, safe, and sustainable food, ensuring the continued success and growth of the industry.
