The Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC) on\u00a0behalf of Canadian fruit producers has provided its support for the National\u00a0Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard for the Fruit and Tree Nut Industries. \u00a0Likewise, the CHC on behalf of Canadian greenhouse producers has provided its\u00a0support for the National Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard for the Greenhouse,\u00a0Nursery, and Floriculture sectors. \u00a0CHC, through representation on the\u00a0Biosecurity Advisory Committees for both sectors, has contributed significantly\u00a0to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) initiative to develop a voluntary \u00a0National Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard for the Fruit and Tree Nut Industries\u00a0and the Greenhouse, Nursery and Floriculture industries..\u00a0 We were joined\u00a0in this effort by representatives from across Canada and from grower groups,\u00a0provincial government and academics alike.<\/p>\n
CHC represents farmers from across Canada\u00a0involved in the growing and packing of over 100 fruit and vegetable crops.\u00a0Members include provincial and national horticultural commodity organizations\u00a0as well as allied and service organizations, provincial governments and \u00a0individual producers. The CHC represents members on key issues such as crop\u00a0protection, access to a consistent supply of farm labour, food safety and traceability,\u00a0fair access to markets, research and innovation and government programs to\u00a0ensure a more innovative, profitable and sustainable horticultural industry for\u00a0future generations. CHC and its members are committed to ensuring that\u00a0strong Canadian farms will continue to be able to provide safe, secure and\u00a0healthy food for families in Canada, and around the world.\u00a0 Minimizing\u00a0risks to Canada\u2019s food production systems, its biodiversity and the economy is\u00a0a priority for the horticultural industry.\u00a0 A comprehensive biosecurity\u00a0system will ensure Canada\u2019s food security, productivity and provide guidance on\u00a0optimal proactive approaches to minimize the risk of introduction and spread of\u00a0disease and pests.\u00a0 Additionally, it will identify appropriate intervention\u00a0in the event of an incursion and specify the roles and responsibilities of the\u00a0various stakeholders.<\/p>\n
Horticulture\u00a0is committed to the development of a consistent national preparedness,\u00a0prevention and response framework, including mitigation of financial impacts,\u00a0which can be incorporated in government, industry and farm level business\u00a0plans.\u00a0 This will enhance Canada\u2019s plant health status, sustainability,\u00a0profitability for horticulture producers, while limiting the need for\u00a0government ad hoc financial programs. Canada will achieve improved competitiveness and limit potential disruptions to trade by establishing a\u00a0biosecurity system that focuses on identifying potential phytosanitary concerns\u00a0and preparing to address phytosanitary issues early.<\/p>\n
Canadian\u00a0fruit and tree nut producers currently implement many biosecurity measures to\u00a0prevent and manage pests.\u00a0 The objective of the National Voluntary\u00a0Farm-Level Biosecurity Standard for the Fruit and Tree Nut industries is to\u00a0provide producers with a nationally consistent approach to prevent the\u00a0introduction and spread of pests through the implementation of biosecurity\u00a0measures.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
