{"id":2943,"date":"2016-06-01T07:49:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T11:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hortcouncil.ca\/?p=2943"},"modified":"2024-09-18T16:00:52","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T20:00:52","slug":"chc-presents-on-bee-health-to-the-house-of-commons-standing-committee-on-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fvgc.ca\/fr\/2016\/06\/01\/chc-presents-on-bee-health-to-the-house-of-commons-standing-committee-on-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"CHC presents on Bee Health to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On May 30, 2016, CHC Executive Vice-President Anne Fowlie presented to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food on the issue of Bee Health Monitoring in Canada. \u00a0The Committee is currently studying the issue of bee health, and Ms. Fowlie\u2019s presentation offered information on how\u00a0\u201cthe plant science\u00a0industry is committed to ensuring that both bees and agriculture co-exist and thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research is ongoing as to the issues which affect pollinator health. \u00a0As Ms. Fowlie states, \u201cAlthough a number of factors are\u00a0seen as potential contributors to these declines, no single factor has been identified as the main\u00a0cause\u2026Canadian, and other, bee researchers overwhelmingly agree that\u00a0the main stressors to bees are pests and parasites diseases, inadequate diet and weather<br \/>\nconditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite reports to the contarary, as Ms. Fowlie points out, \u201cHive numbers have increased\u00a0significantly over the last 20 years and are the highest they have ever been, according to\u00a0Statistics Canada. In 2014, there were over 8,000 beekeepers in Canada keeping over 600,000\u00a0hives. That was a 24% increase in hives since 2000.
