There is an urgent need for access to an increased range of modern and innovative crop protection tools as many of the products once relied upon have been cancelled or have lost \/ reduced effectiveness in the field.\u00a0 This urgency is underscored by the unprecedented demand for the emergency use registration program \u2013 a program that was created to address crisis pest outbreaks when existing tools are insufficient.<\/p>\n
Canadian growers rely on two government agencies to access crop protection tools.<\/p>\n
As pest management becomes increasingly complex from increased pest pressures and economic impacts from the pandemic (e.g. inflation), it is essential that the government ensures the PMRA and PMC are equipped and empowered to be engaged partners in developing practical solutions for growers. Crop protection is about reducing food waste, and improving access, affordability, and reliability of safe, nutritious and sustainably grown fresh fruit and vegetables along the supply chain from farmers to consumers. Canadian fruit and vegetable growers rely on crop protection products to help control diseases, insect pests, weeds, and invasive species. A notable initiative led by the PMC is the grower-supported Minor Use Program. This program has facilitated the registration of over 2,300 new applications of crop protection products since 2003. It serves as a critical resource for Canadian fruit and vegetable growers, providing them with essential support.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ text_font=”||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”Lato||||||||” header_2_font_size=”36px” header_2_line_height=”1.5em” module_alignment=”center” custom_margin=”||15px|” custom_padding=”|||” animation_style=”flip” animation_direction=”left” animation_intensity_flip=”20%” animation_starting_opacity=”100%” global_colors_info=”{}”]\n The PMC is also actively involved in the development of integrated pest management solutions and the registration of biopesticides through its Pesticide Risk Reduction team. These projects are vital for exploring innovative alternative management strategies for agricultural pests, fostering sustainable practices in the industry.<\/p>\n As crop protection products face the possibility of being lost in PMRA re-evaluations, the PMC assumes a pivotal role in identifying suitable pest management alternatives. However, the capacity of the PMC was impacted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the acceptance of only 10 additional projects. In 2023, the PMC was able to expand its capacity to accommodate 21 projects, illustrating its commitment to meeting industry needs and supporting growers’ requirements.
